Philanthropy and Service

Our national philanthropy supported by both collegiate and alumnae chapters is speech and hearing and The Painted Turtle camp.  Delta Zeta's partnerships with The Painted Turtle and The Starkey Hearing Foundation were announced at the 2006 National Convention.  All of these important programs provide additional volunteer and giving opportunities for collegiate and alumnae members.

Delta Zeta has a philanthropic partnership with the Sound Beginings Program.  Chapters also support local and national speech and hearing organizations, such as Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., the only four-year liberal arts school in the world devoted wholly to the needs, instruction, and training of young people who are deaf, and the House Ear Institute, which is one of the world's foremost research, teaching, and treatment centers in the field of hearing.

Delta Zeta at RMU has given money and time to each of the national philanthropies. Since 2009, our chapter has sent over 30 hearing aid Build-a-Bears to children that are speech and hearing impaired. In addition to national philanthropies, we also donate our time to several local organizations in our area. Our chapter has made it a priority to volunteer one night a month at West Hills Home and Rehab Center in Moon Township since Fall of 2009. As a whole, our chapter has worked several car washes to benefit RMU's Memorial Garden for students who have passed away while attending RMU.

Our chapter was awarded the RMU Volunteer Organization of the Year award in recognition of service to the Greater Pittsburgh Area and to RMU's Haiti Relief effort. Immediately after the tragedy in Haiti, our chapter came together with other campus organizations and organized a dance and chinese auction to benefit WorldVision's relief effort. At the end of the weekend, we raised over $3050!

Each Delta Zeta sister is required to do 15 hours of community service per semester. In Spring 2010, our chapter was recognized nationally for Standard of Excellence for Community Service with each member averaging out to over 25 hours per semester.

Variety: The Children's Charity of Pittsburgh

In the Spring of 2011, the sister's of Delta Zeta- Xi Chi chapter welcomed a new and exciting local
philanthropy: Variety: The Children's Charity of Pittsburgh. It began in 1928 when a baby girl was abandoned in the Sheridan Theatre in East Liberty.  This organization serves to help children with physical and mental disabilities. Delta Zeta- Xi Chi has volunteered in events such as The Valentine's Day Dance and the Anniversary Gala.

Delta Zeta Volunteers at the Anniversary Gala 2011

In the spring of 2011, Delta Zeta started a fundraiser for the charity: The Colonial Auction. Students and faculty at Robert Morris University would volunteer and auction off "services" (i.e. personalized song, breakfast in bed, personal trainer for a day, etc...). The chapter raised over $2,000 for Variety.

Look forward to the 2nd Annual Colonial Auction that will be held on Wednesday, April 4, 2012! Let's make this year an even bigger success!

In Fall 2011, our chapter completed a total of 1,237 community service hours!
